日本「網球王子」錦織圭在奧運男單前3戰1盤未失，晉級8強已追平個人生涯最佳成績。身為8強中唯一亞洲選手，他下一戰將碰上體能勁爆的「跳跳人」孟菲爾斯（Gael Monfils）。若成功晉級，將是1988年網球重返奧運以來，第二位晉級男單4強的亞洲選手。
錦織圭於上屆倫敦奧運，8強戰不幸敗給連續兩屆奧運都擊敗球王喬科維奇(Novak Djokovic)的狄波特羅（Juan Martin del Potro）；12日凌晨的男單第三輪，他擊敗世界第77的斯洛伐克選手馬汀(Andrej Martin)順利晉8。
錦織圭下一輪的對手為「跳跳人」孟菲爾斯，2人在職業賽場曾2度交手，都由錦織圭奪勝。錦織圭若獲勝，將是繼1996亞特蘭大奧運銅牌，印度選手佩斯(Leander Paes)後，第二位晉級男單4強的亞洲人。
錦織圭的8強戰，預計將在13日凌晨1時開打。
